On the ideal superyacht, the technology should be as discreet as a good manservant.

Which is exactly what you get with what has been described as the Jeeves of the high seas: the 120ft Bristolian.

The vessel’s lines might lead you to think this lightweight sloop is low tech – but touchscreens around the boat control everything from sails to lighting.

Slot Car Racing Can Be A Great Hobby For You

by Mike Selvon

The hobby of slot car racing is enjoyed by both adults and children. While it is technically a hobby, rc car racing is considered by some to be a sport. The cars used in a slot car race are typically just miniature versions of the real-life stock cars.

Similar to a "Hot Wheels" automobile, these cars have an electric motor in them and they run on a slot car race track. While many people enjoy this hobby just as a fun past-time, others take it very seriously and will go to great lengths to fabricate their own cars or modify a commercially built one so that it will perform optimally.

The slot car racing world is made up of a variety of different racing enthusiasts. Some, like little boys, choose to just race commercially built slot cars in the basement or a garage somewhere. Others will go to any extreme to participate in highly publicized races that require specially built or modified cars that perform at high levels not normally seen in hobby rc car racing.

Most of these slot car race competitions pay good money to the winner. Those who are not really interested in competitively racing slot cars may choose to simply collect the cars and will work on creating a custom automobile racing slot track, similar to the ones produced by model train aficionado's.

There is a special kind of track that is used in slot car racing. The track is flat with a groove, or slot, that runs down the middle of it. Metal strips run the length of the track on either side of the slot and provide a source of power for the automobile as it moves along.

The low voltage electric motor receives its power when it comes into contact with those metal strips on the track. The driver has a controller that he holds in his hands; however, it only controls the speed of the automobile. This is vitally important, however, for the purpose of keeping the automobile on the track. Leaving the track will disqualify the driver in a competitive race.

Magnet traction is used to help keep the automobile in its track during slot car racing. It is legal, but it is not liked by many rc automobile racing enthusiasts. This is because many feel that it takes away the advantage of the rear swing of the automobile and the ability to use propulsion to an advantage around curves. They also feel it takes away from the original notion and challenge of rc car racing.

Top 10 Mid-Engined Hatchback

Number 1:Volkswagen GTI W12 650 Concept VW Golf GTI W12 with the rear seats ripped out and replaced by a twin-turbo, six-liter W12, driving a whopping 650 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque through a faux-paddle-shifted six-speed automatic to the rear wheels.

Number 2:Metro 6R4 Group B rally car
Developed by Williams Grand Prix Engineering, the Metro 6R4 bore only a passing resemblance to the staid budget hatch on which it was ostensibly based. It alternatively wore Austin, Rover or MG badges under the British Leyland umbrella, and drove up to 380 horsepower from its mid-mounted 3-liter DOHC quattrovalve V6 to all four wheels. The engine was so advanced that it ended up, in twin-turbo form, powering the Jaguar XJ220 supercar

Number 3: Renault Clio V6
The 3-liter V6 drove 252hp to the rear wheels, which propelled the Clio V6 to sixty in 5.9 seconds. Poor power-to-weight meant that the mid-engined version wasn't much faster than the more conventional Clio 172 Cup on which it was based, but the bottom line is that the Clio V6 is the only one here that was actually offered commercially. And that's why we love it.

Number 4:Sbarro Ferrari Super 8
Sbarro started with a Ferrari 308 GTB, with a shortened frame and custom bodywork. The standard 3-liter 260hp V8 drove through a five-speed manual to...you guessed it...the rear wheels. Only one example was said to have been built, in follow up to the Super Twelve that was powered by two Kawasaki 6-cylinder motorbike engines

Number 5: Ford Festiva Shogun
The perfect car, then, to turn into an exotic, and hot-rodders Chuck Beck and Rick Titus did exactly that. Replacing the standard four-banger, Beck and Titus took the Yamaha-developed 3-liter V6 from the Ford Taurus SHO and dropped it behind the front seats. The requisite chassis mods followed, and hilarity ensued. The car could hit 60 in 4.6 seconds, cover the quarter mile in 12.9 and reach 1g of lateral acceleration. Only seven examples were made, each of them in a different color.

Number 6:Renault Megane Trophy Concept
The French automaker, indisputable king of the mid-engined hatch, said the car was capable of lapping the track about as fast as a Porsche 911 GT3, which is quite a benchmark. Based on the new Megane III, the Trophy featured a 3.5-liter Nissan-sourced V6 driving 360 horsepower to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential.

Number 7:Nissan Micra R
Nissan picked up the torch in 2004 with the Micra R concept, packing a 265hp race-spec engine in the trunk that could propel the one-off to sixty mph in under five seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 150 mph

Number 8:Toyota Aygo Crazy
The car essentially crossed a micro-hatch with an MR2, placing a turbocharged 1.8-liter four in the back, surrounded by a roll cage, but no power brakes, power steering, traction control or ABS. 197 horsepower in a 1000kg package was good enough for a spring to sixty in less than six seconds

Number 9:MTM Audi TT Bimoto
Audi was built by an aftermarket tuner. And instead of moving the front engine on the standard model to the back, MTM opted to supplement it with a second engine. The pair of 1.8-liter turbo fours drove 505 horsepower through a pair of six-speed manuals to all four wheels, propelling the special TT to a Nardo speed record of 245 mph, hitting sixty in 3.1 seconds along the way.

Number 10:Matra Murena
The Murena featured three-across seating, the seats were arrayed in a bench with conventional offset steering and a middle seat that folded flat into an arm-rest. In an odd twist, Renault would end up building a one-off mid-engined concept based on the Espace years later with the 820hp V10 from the Williams-Renault F1 car, which warrants honorable mention at the end of our list.

A Race Without Stars

Can you imagine a featured race that NASCAR holds and not have in the field drivers like Clint Bowyer, Juan Pablo Montoya, Ryan Newman, or Tony Stewart? Nope, not me.

Or better yet, this featured race will have relatively new drivers like David Stremme, Casey Mears, Joey Logano, Reed Sorenson, and Travis Kvapil in it.

But then, can you imagine having NASCAR call it some kind of AllStar Race? Nah... really?

Oh, yea... they will. After changing their rules without, what looks like, not really thinking it through, or maybe secretly punishing someone, NASCAR changed how the drivers will fill the field for the Coors Shootout. Instead of taking, say the making the top 3 qualifying drivers from each race eligible for the event, now it's the top six teams from each of the manufacturers that will be able to compete rather than those who might have earned it by winning a pole in the previous year.

I'm trying not to utter expletives on this one, but there ya have it. They say that the switch of sponsors, from Budweiser to Coors had something to do with the complete oversight that NASCAR rules over, but I'm thinking it's just a nice cop out.

A lot of people seem to feel that slowly but surely Brian France is making a mockery of what was once a true test of man and machine. Pretty soon, we may just be watching cars with power steering and air conditioning run circles around the tracks. I don't know what to think. I try to stay supportive, but at times I find myself more often than not throwing my hands up instead of saying anything good.

So with that, I am...
