Choosing Petrol Remote Controlled Cars for Beginners

by Paul Hockney
The hobby of remote control cars has come on leaps and bounds over the years. First came the electric remote controlled car and then came both the faster Nitro and petrol remote control cars for even more fast fun.

Nowadays remote control toys come in all shapes and sizes. Ranging from small cars to buggies and then you have monster trucks followed by fast moving helicopters. Basically there is now something for everyone of all levels. But if you really want to join the 'big boys' then you need to seriously think about getting a Nitro or Petrol remote controlled car.

Petrol remote control cars are used by some of the most serious RC car racers and although they are the most expensive, you can spend upwards of £1,000, for a serious race ready model. Plus these are only suitable for people over the age of 16 as they are seriously fast and in the wrong hands can be extremely dangerous.

So what should you be looking for if you are a first time petrol RC car racer or just want one to take out every once in a while to your local car park or off road trail.

Firstly, you should always be careful if you are buying an RC car/truck/buggy/helicopter from the main online auction sites. The market has been flooded with cheap models, which on first appearance appear to be well built will start to fall apart after a few outings on a bumpy off-road trail. Basically, don't be tempted to go on price. Money well spent now, even if it's your first RC car, will ensure you get a model that will stand up to lots of knocks.

Do your homework on what is best for you. So take a few hours to visit a few remote control forums and see what models they recommend for beginners and also for advanced users. You may find that your budget allows you to get something in between.

What you should end up with from your research is a list of 2-3 Manufacturers along with 2-3 different models offered by each one in your price range. When you do narrow down your search to the last few manufacturers and models then you should then consider the pros and cons of each one.

For example, do you get any spare parts with your purchase? Or do they provide any tools to repair or maintain your new speed demon. This is especially key for first time buyers, as you need to be getting something that works straight out of the box and not have to spend time and money on specialist tools when one of the wheels needs attention on the first few outings.

Also, as a first time buyer you should see if your purchase also includes a battery charger. These can cost £15+ so if one isn't included then see if you can haggle a little and get one thrown in for free or at least get one at a discount.

In terms of the technical specification the following are just a few o the things your first petrol remote controlled car should include:

· Heavy duty parts, made from metal · Fully adjustable oil-filled shock absorbers · Vented brake disc system · Removable sealed electronics box for use on wet days
Petrol remote control cars are so much fun and you can save yourself a lot of time and money by carrying out initial research and then making sure you get as much bang for your buck. Have fun!
