Fly Away Into the Wild Blue Yonder With RC Airplanes and Leave Your Cares Behind

by August James

You have probably passed by a radio control airfield and witnessed r-c airplanes flying in the air.
And wondered what it would feel like to fly model aircraft.
Well good news, wonder no more, you can learn.
Flying radio control models is a great deal of fun.
Many people throughout the country are involved in this hobby.
There is something for everyone to enjoy such as cars, trucks, helicopters and boats.
But this article will focus on radio control airplanes.
There are various aircraft models to choose from, however this article is geared toward beginners.
The recommended aircraft for beginners is a A-R-F(Almost Ready To Fly) High-wing Trainer.
It is already built, and requires a few hours of assembly to complete the model for flight.
It has a fairly large wingspan of 60"-70" inches.
They also aid in better visibility and flight orientation.
This is highly recommended for beginner pilots.
Why? because high-wing trainer aircraft fly very slowly, allowing the pilot time to react to the controls on the radio transmitter.
Anyone interested in getting involved with this hobby, should do the following:
* To locate a experienced flight instructor, visit a local hobby shop in your city.
* Many r-c flight instructors work in hobby shops and are delighted to help beginners new to the hobby.
* A flight instructor can assist you in selecting the proper aircraft engine and other needed accessories.
* Also join the academy of model aeronautics(AMA) by phone 1-765-287-1256 or their website address http://www.model-aircraft.org for more information.
Here are some basic consideration questions?
Can I Afford IT?
A beginner package can cost between $300 - $500.00.
Do I Need A Fast Aircraft?
NO!
A high-wing trainer airplane is greatly recommended for beginner pilots.
They fly around 20-35 m-p-h and land at slow speeds of 10-15 m-p-h.
Does the aircraft need to be large?
Yes!
Because aircraft with large wingspans have a greater visibility in the sky than smaller ones.
Overall, there are many other facets to r-c airplanes than are listed here.
For much more information, visit a website that offers tips and articles http://www.rc-airplane-flying.com

Enjoying an RC Car Hobby

by Caitlina Fuller

If you like cars and trucks or you like to build models you might find that you would also enjoy a hobby that includes the building and use of an RC car. This is something that a lot of people of all ages and walks of life enjoy. Many people think that remote controlled vehicles are just for kids, but it doesn't matter how old you get, they are still a lot of fun! If you have been looking for something to do in your free time this may be just what you were looking for.
You can buy remote controlled cars that are already built and ready to enjoy if you would like. Many people buy their first car completely built so they can immediately begin playing with it and enjoying the fun and relaxation that can come from simply playing with the car in their backyard or in an open field. If you want to get a bit more involved in the process you can begin to think about building your own remote controlled vehicle.
A lot of people get into the hobby buying their cars and then find that they would rather build their own gas RC car. This is something that will take a lot of time and patience, especially the first time, but it is also a lot of fun. You'll find that when each phase of the build is complete you have a sense of satisfaction that you don't get from a lot of other things in life. This is something that you are doing for yourself and for fun, so the rewards are without limits.
You can buy a kit if you would like that walk you through the assembly of your own remote controlled car or truck or you can simply piece it all together. You can also build RC trucks, which also come in kits or you can build your own. It's better to start out with a kit since it can be quite complicated to build your own vehicle, but either way you'll find that it is a lot of fun and the challenge is definitely worth it.
A hobby that involves RC cars is really a lot of fun. You will find that you can evolve from someone who simply wants to enjoy playing with the cars to someone who builds them and takes it very seriously. This can be a hobby that allows you to take your mind off of other things while you do something that has some very enjoyable end results. It's up to you how involved you get and what you do, the idea is just to have fun and have a hobby that gives back as much as you put in.

DIGGER, Stay In The Fraking Hole, Here In Turn Two

Tight In Turn 2 is kicking it back in gear. It may not be the weekly thing we had last year, but when something is burning our butts, it's gonna show up here! Today, I'm dragging Digger over the coals, because frankly, I'm insulted by FOX if they think I like this crap. It's not as bad as say, ABC heading off to America's Funniest Videos with just a few laps to go, but if they keep hitting me up with this cartoon puke, it will soon overtake that infamous moment in television history.

~~~~~~~
Let's hit Turn Two now, shall we?:
FOX is interesting. The group that telecasts the sporting events likes animated characters to boost up their sporting events. When FOX took over Soccer, a soccer fan said the telecast got all glitzed up and it hasn't been the same since.
Now with Digger seeming to get more air time, I am forced to suffer through these bits of cartoon FOX is shoving down our throats. Why? It's one thing when FOX has their football robot in the lower left corner. That's fine. It doesn't get out there and dance around on screen during the plays or when someone gets hurt. Digger, on the other hand tends to show up during racing scenes and accidents when they make Digger do cute things while race cars are wrecking. Digger trivializes the moment and the announcers have to jump in on the bandwagon and boost the gopher. Gads, I hope they're getting hazard pay, or stupid pay or whatever pay for doing that extra bit.
Digger is the name of the damn camera under the track. It has no purpose, no story, no redeeming feature or a place in this sports telecast except to show some pretty neat undercarriage shots when the cars do get that low. I'll give it that.
But what has me wondering is if FOX is worried about their ratings.
We have a ton more coverage of Digger. Yet from what I can tell, not a lot of people really like it. In fact I'm 2 for 2 in changing my channel to the Sci-Fi Channel and watching that rather than the rest of the pre-race show. Cripes, The Sci-Fi Channel should thank FOX. Digger makes them look good.
Now I've said this before, from both angles: FOX Looks like they're adding glitzy cute girls to their promo shots at the front of the show in mock victory lap scenes. I've never found it to be a good thing when a show adds a hottie to the cast. It usually means something bad is happening with the ratings. On the flip side, I am not technically complaining about having to see the girls on my TV screen.
Back on Track:
Personally, I'd like to see the actual tech behind the Digger 'Cam. If it's what I suspect it to be, it can be pretty cool. But FOX, leave us alone. Put your cheap Caddyshack mimic on the Cartoon Network and let us watch NASCAR, for real. If we need cartoon violence, we'll just replay Jimmy Spencer popping Kurt Busch in his car. OR watch wrestling on the Sci-Fi Channel.
Charlie from On Pit Row Has this to say about the issue:
I had fun during the race telecast from Auto Club Speedway, watching the race, while monitoring things on Twitter. There were a ton of negative - and often humorous - Tweets about Digger. I didn't see much positive. In fact, I don't remember anything pro-gopher.
I wonder if the producer of Fox' NASCAR broadcast was around, or is a disiple of, the original Tracy Ullmann Show. That's where, many moons ago, a little annimated short called the Simpsons got it's start. Maybe Digger will move on to bigger and better things. We can hope, at least.
Charlie Turner
~
Since Charlie was so nice to participate here, we chatted a little bit over on his site about Dale Earnhardt Jr and if he's in trouble already, this early in the season. See what we have to say over on On Pit Row.
Nitro Radio Cars-3
Another type of RC car is the nitro powered model cars. We all know thatnitro radio cars are fast and it's what most hobbyists' reason why nitro cars are often chosen over electric RC cars. But of course, this isn't an ideal car model for beginners. Compared to electric powered models too, nitro cars give the real feeling of how racing should be. Over the years, development has been improved for better and efficient running.
There are numerous disadvantages in using nitro cars and maintenance among them. Dirt is easily accumulated after a short run and the chassis of the car requires cleaning in a regular basis. Also, another requirement for maintaining nitro powered cars is how it should be properly tuned. Nitro cars need to perform in top condition and maximum speed without consuming much of the fuel. Through proper tuning, overheating of these types of cars is prevented.
Compared to electric powered cars, a battery-powered car can achieve a run of about 10 minutes tops and then the batteries need to be recharged again; whereas nitro cars can be driven for longer duration.
A nitro powered car has four distinct parts and it includes special nitro fuel, the high horsepower engine, the pipe for tune exhaust and the air filter can be replaced. These parts are important for cleaning and regular check up because if these materials are neglected; a possible mechanical wear could happen.
One safety precaution falls under collision. Nitro cars are more prone to collision with other nitro cars due to the speed and power during acceleration. It's important to be aware first of safety measures regarding nitro cars before putting them to the real test. Generally, nitro cars require more attention since it asks for a lot of maintenance; but you can guarantee its performance as well if handled with great care. Go ahead and try outnitro radio cars.
Oprah
So, I'm not really a regular Oprah viewer, but I watched today's show since part of it was filmed last week in Sacramento by Lisa Ling. Although it didn't show Sacramento's best side, it showed a real side of not only Sacramento, but our nation. Everyday thousands of American's have no place to call home. Thousands of kids have no place to do their homework, many sleep in shelters, others sleep in tent cities or on the streets. I spent one (somewhat controlled) night on the streets of Sacramento outside of the Salvation Army a few years ago, it was an interesting experience and gave me some perspective on what others are facing, but I honestly have no way of feeling what they feel. I don't have a solution to the problem and I'm not even going to give a suggestion, just remember, this recession has many stories and many faces.
Sacramento Bee story from my experience on the streets ...
'It's hard out there'
A night on the streets teaches teens the truth about life of the homeless
Monday, November 20, 2006
Story appeared in METRO section, Page B3
By Todd Milbourn - Bee Staff Writer
Growing up middle class in Jackson, Nicole Ferguson didn't deal too much with poverty. Or homelessness.
She'd heard, like many unexposed teenagers, that the causes of homelessness were simple: that it is a matter of choice. Drunks living for a drink. Bums living for a government check.
But this weekend changed that. Ferguson was one of about 20 young people who spent Saturday night on the streets, trying to get a better sense of why homeless people are homeless.
Working with the Salvation Army, the group -- members of First Covenant Church of Sacramento in Rancho Cordova -- brought meals to the homeless in downtown parks. They slept Saturday night, bundled in sleeping bags, outside a B Street warehouse.
"You listen to people. You hear stories. You realize that you have a lot in common," said Ferguson, 19, who's studying to become an interior designer.
"You realize that you, too, can fall on hard times."
Changing perceptions -- that was the point of the night. The church has an active youth and outreach ministry, which strives to bring Christ's word to the streets and hope to the hopeless.
"We have so many stereotypes. We think these people are all alcoholic bums," said Josiah Watters, the church's outreach minister, who organized the effort to coincide with the Thanksgiving holiday. "We're out here getting a taste for what life is really like. It's not so simple."
Homeless folks said they were appreciative.
Dennis Covington said life was pretty good for him back in the 1980s.
He had a good job as a security guard, a fine wife. Then his mother died. A bitter family fight over the estate ensued. That was tough on his wife, who eventually left and kept the house. The 50- year-old moved from Oakland to Sacramento to get away from the family mess.
"I meet so many smart people out here, people with big degrees, worked good jobs," said Covington, who's been staying at the Salvation Army for a couple of weeks to save up money to get a place to live. "You don't know nothing, 'til you talk to somebody."
Capt. John Brackenbury, head of the Sacramento Salvation Army, said he was heartened by the church group's effort. He said it's so easy for well-off people to look the other way when it comes to problems like homelessness.
"Christ was dealing with homelessness 2,000 years ago. We're still dealing with it today," he said.
"We're not going to eliminate it," he added, referring to the city's 10-year plan to eradicate homelessness. "But we are going to get beyond this idea that there's a Band-Aid approach. We got to get at the root of the problem."
The effort began Saturday with church members scattering around Sacramento, looking for homeless folks to talk to. They brought brown-bagged meals -- sandwiches, Capri-Sun and some fruit.
Nathanial Anisodon, a 22-year-old from Sacramento, said he met a homeless man at a downtown park who used to be a lawyer. The man told Anisodon that his life went into a spiral after his wife died, and he hasn't recovered.
"It's hard out there," said Anisodon, who spent some time in the Air Force.
"You realize that anything can happen."
Is Having A Radio Controlled Hobby Expensive?
by skraps
It can be hugely expensive if you are fanatical about having the best radio controlled car, tanks, plane, boat or whatever.
Especially if you opt for the unbuilt versions and go down the road of building these for yourself from scratch.
Now I don't want to step on anyones toes but where is the fun in that? For me getting the RC car, boat or whatever up and running is the main aim, so opting for self built models just made sense to me.
Problem is though...the price doesn't differ much and the accessories can add up too.
Most of my time spent online searching RC stores was a fruitless excercise because many of the stores were either based outside the UK (where I live) or only stocked toy versions when I wanted the pro stuff.
Then I stumbled across a few very good thorough forums and articles (like this) that pointed me in the right direction. Therefore it is for that reason solely that I wanted to write something to help others looking (as I was) to buy their first radio controlled car.
Stop your search now because I have found a site that offers beginner level entry RC machines as well as nitro and petrol versions for the more advanced RC fan.
Do not waste your cash on toy RC helicopters that only go up or toy radio controlled cars that only go forward - get the real thing for half the price and get consumed in the RC world like I have :)
I see a red moon rising: rare natural phenomena captured on camera
Stunning pictures of a red rising moon have emerged today.
The rare natural phenomena, which is known as ‘Etruscan Vase’, is caused by differences in air temperature near the earth's surface.
Also known as an Omega moon because of its shape, the optical effect is more usually seen in views of the setting sun rather than the rising full moon.
Photographer John Stetson caught the moment on camera at Casco Bay near Cape Elizabeth in Maine, USA, earlier this month.
Mirages such as this are possible when there is a layer of relatively warm air at the ocean surface with colder air above it, with a rapid drop in temperature the higher above surface.
On the day the pictures were taken the water was 39F (4C) while the air well above it was a chilly 18F (-8C).
Light passing through the atmosphere bends away from the warmer air towards the colder, denser air.
The result is that we see two moons - one being a mirror image of the other.
The lower part of the image is formed by rays from the moon which are reflected upwards from the warm layer of air at the surface.
If you are above this layer, you see both images together as rays also pass relatively undeflected over the top of the warm layer.
Optics expert Les Cowley said: ‘The effect is not dissimilar to the mirage seen above a hot road surface.
‘The mirage depends on your height above the sea surface. You must be above the warm air layer but climb too high and the effects diminish.’
The moon appears red in colour because it is low in the sky, and blue light from it is scattered by the atmosphere while more red light passes through.
Can Kenseth Get His Own Three-Peat?
After winning the first two races of the season, Matt Kenseth joined an exclusive list. Before Matt, a driver won the first two races only four times. The most recent was 1997 when Jeff Gordon won the Daytona 500 and at Rockingham.
Right now, no driver has ever won the first three races of the season.
Among the previous four, only Gordon won the championship in the season that he opened with two consecutive wins.
Kenseth like Vegas. He might have a shot at this 3-peat! He has two wins at Las Vegas (2003-2004) and has led 438 laps there, more than any other driver.
Since 2005, at Las Vegas, Kenseth has a Driver Rating of 107.8, with an Average Running Position of 10.8 and 90 Fastest Laps Run. All those rank in the top five in the series.
Electric RC Cars Drifting
by Jeffri Alisan
Drift is considered to be when car wheels slip either only rear wheels or both ( front and rear ) wheels then the car started sliding sideways while taking a high speed in the corner.
History of drifting car was started somewhere in 1970's in Japan . Drifting has ability to get rear tires to slide more than front tires meant it could power much faster than another car around corner. this techniques was adapted on the winding mountain roads and this make car drifting is very popular in Japan. And now this popularity has spilled over to rc cars. If you have ever watched rc cars drifting, you will be instantly hooked.
This new challenging driving skill has made the Electric RC car drift one of the most popular cars in the RC world. If you can master the drifting technique with these cars, you can even join the RC Drift Car Competition,
For drifting, electric rc cars are better than nitro models. It is because of their lighter weight , motor durability and easier to control the throttle during a drift. Nitro rc cars would probably burn out the clutch and overheat the engines if used for drifting. There are advantages of Electric RC car models. Electric RC drift cars offer more consistent torque and faster throttle response than nitro models and make them the better option for RC drifting.
Electric RC Car Advantages: -Consistent Torque -Faster Throttle Response -Relatively Clean -Indoor Operation
Electric motors effectively produce instant torque, where nitro engines, take time for the engine to spool up and clutch to engage. Electric RC drift cars use high capacity compact batteries to drive a brushed or brushless motor via an electronic speed control. It is recommended that you use a shaft drive rc car rather than a belt driven transmission for your drifter. The shaft drive provides good throttle response compare to belt drive. But don't worry about that because many RC community use belt drive cars for drifting without problems. But if you are starting from scratch, shaft drive cars may be the best drifters. Also, use a 4 wheel drive machine if you want to go drifting. 4x4 is easier to control and drift. The only item you need to convert your touring car into a drift car is to change the tires. RC drift cars use tires that are made out of PVC pipes. You can also buy specially made drift tires made by Yokomo, HPI and Tamiya.
Proper control may be difficult at first, but with some practice it will gives you a better experience because practice is the basis of a great drifter. Creating your own videos is a good and easy way to view progress, and learn from your mistakes.
The amazing 3D pavement art that has pedestrians on edge
Giant ice-age crevasses are few and far between - especially in Ireland.
Don't worry, it is the latest creation of 3-D street artist Edgar Mueller.
The crack, appearing to show a fault in the earth's crust, was created for the town's 'Festival of World Culture' last year in the town of Dun Laoghaire.
And locals wasted no time having fun with the work by pretending to teeter precariously on the edge of the deep hole.
Mueller said: '3D street painting itself is a very new artform which only a handful of people do worldwide. Its nature is to trick people's eyes and show them a new "reality".
'The technique itself is called anamorphism and has been known since the Middle Ages. It was used by famous painters like Michelangelo, da Vinci and others in their murals.'
Residents of a German town were horrified when they emerged from their homes to find a lava pool running through the middle of the road.
Scroll down to watch a video of the making of the The Crevasse...
Spanning over 8 x 50 metres, 'Use your eyes' is one of the biggest three-dimensional street paintings ever made.
With the help of locals, the German artist's jaw-dropping art involved clever planning so that when the picture is viewed from a certain angle it looks totally three-dimensional.
Mueller plays with big areas and elemental forces - and also asks that his audience enter the scenery and interact with the picture.
He said: 'it gets thrilling when the observer runs in the picture.'
His other works include a 250 square metre giant fissure in Ireland, that took five days to paint.
The artist who makes striking sculptures from matchsticks
Artists like to stick out and show their flair - and none more so than David Mach who creates colourful creatures from tens of thousands of matchsticks.
Mr Mach makes animals such as gorillas, grizzly bears and rhinos by combining an array of matchsticks with different coloured tips.
The 52-year-old immortalises the animals in such detail that his pieces sell for between £20,000 and £35,000 each.
His 15-inch high gorilla - with flared nostrils and a fierce open mouth - required 30,000 matches and took three months as each match was painstakingly glued onto a mould.
The Scot, who works from a studio in London, recreates the animals' features and different skin shades using 14 different coloured matchsticks imported from Japan.
He said: 'I like to make figures that are instantly recognisable and make people take notice.
'The animals are a joy and a challenge to make because they have difficult features such as antlers and horns.
'I love to use a variety of material for my pieces. I try and use common things, like matchsticks or coat-hangers, because people know exactly what they are. These items are in everyone's lives but are almost invisible.'
Mr Mach and his wife Lesley, who helps him run the studio, have made more than 350 of them so far.
The sculptures are crafted by firstly making a clay mould of the head and creating a fibreglass or plastic version from it. The matchsticks are then stuck on using wood glue.
But although their work is labour-intensive and much sought after, their sculptures are not always kept for posterity.
Despite all the work that goes into them - sometimes the couple burn the figureheads at exhibition launches.
Mrs Mach, 51, said that some customers even request that the pieces are burned to achieve an eerie effect.
She said: 'They are highly flammable and when they go up it's highly dramatic. It can send flames shooting 6ft into the air but because they're just matchsticks, it's all over in a few seconds.'
The practice of setting fire to them came after the couple accidentally set fire to one of them in the studio.
Mrs Mach said: 'A lot of people think that David is something of a pyromaniac but it's really not the case - he just enjoys working with matchsticks.'
But it's not just matchsticks that hold a fascination - his style is based on flowing assemblages of mass-produced objects and he has experimented with pieces made of magazines, newspapers and car tyres.
He once crafted a 12ft-high sculpture of a gorilla out of coat-hangers which sold for £200,000.
Other works include a public sculpture depicting an LNER Class A4 steam engine made from 185,000 bricks on the A66 near Darlington, County Durham.
He has exhibited all over the world and in 1988 was nominated for the Turner Prize.
In 2000 he joined the Royal Academy of Arts as Professor of Sculpture.
A balut is a fertilized duck (or chicken) egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell. They are common, everyday food in some countries in Southeast Asia, such as in the Philippines, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
5. Roasted Guinea Pig
Guinea pigs were originally domesticated for their meat in the Andes. It continues to be a major part of the diet in Peru and Bolivia, particularly in the Andes Mountains highlands; it is also eaten in some areas of Ecuador and Colombia. Because guinea pigs require much less room than traditional livestock and reproduce extremely quickly, they are a more profitable source of food and income than many traditional stock animals, such as pigs and cows; moreover, they can be raised in an urban environment.
Guinea pig meat is high in protein and low in fat and cholesterol, and is described as being similar to rabbit and the dark meat of chicken. The animal may be served fried, broiled, or roasted
Peruvians consume an estimated 65 million guinea pigs each year, and the animal is so entrenched in the culture that one famous painting of the Last Supper in the main cathedral in Cusco shows Christ and the twelve disciples dining on guinea pig.
